Mae Brown Webb. [PAA B L2637/15]

During the early part of her career with the organization, Mae appears to have played for both the Gradettes and the Grads. In March 1928, for example, there is a photo of Mae with the Gradettes in the Edmonton Bulletin, and on the same day, the Edmonton Journal carried a picture of the Grads that also included Mae.23 When playing with the Grads, she was mostly a substitute, and a valuable one at that, because she could play either the forward or guard positions with equal ability. She was known in those days as a “utility” player. Nonetheless, she was a regular member of the Grads when they toured Europe in the summer of 1928 and when they went on an extensive trip to the west coast of Canada and the United States in the summer of 1930. In October 1930, Mae announced that she was leaving the team because “she had played long enough and will hereafter follow the games from a seat on the sidelines.”24

After retiring, Mae continued to work as a stenographer until she was married in September 1937 to Bruce Webb, a manufacturer’s agent. Together they raised their family in Edmonton, which included son Gary and daughter Jane. With her husband constantly travelling, Mae ran the household and undertook volunteer work. In the 1950s and 1960s, for example, she was very involved with the Edmonton YWCA as a board member and executive officer; she was awarded a life membership in 1971 in recognition of her service to the organization.25

After fifty-nine years of marriage, Mae was widowed in 1996. Unfortunately, she suffered a stroke about a year after her husband died and was thereafter confined to bed. She passed away on April 7, 2000 at the age of ninety-six, survived by her children and their spouses, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Her daughter Jane recalled that her mother loved to talk about her days with the Grads: “What she brought to the Grads was always seen in the family in terms of dedication, determination and energy.”26

Gladys Fry Douglas (1927–1936)

Gladys Alberta Fry was different from most other Grads. She was the first “south side girl” to join the team, which meant that she was a product of Edmonton’s south side schools and the University of Alberta. In other words, she was not a graduate of McDougall Commercial. She was also the first Grad to play on the team after she was married. Or rather, she was the only player that Coach Page knew to be married. At just over 5'9", she was certainly one of the tallest Grads, and she was the only left-handed player in the team’s history.
